​Entry-Level Electronics & Controls Engineering Technician -- Accelerators


Starfire is seeking a highly motivated persons to join our technical engineering team to support particle accelerator production, test, and validation.  We seek candidates for two similar roles: (1) electrostatic high-voltage accelerators and (2) electromagnetic pulsed microwave accelerators.  In both roles, the candidate will support electronic circuit assembly, electronics subsystem fabrication & testing, support digital & analog communications with embedded microcontrollers, and support high-voltage and plasma source testing and measurement.

We seek candidates familiar with electronic test and measurement, data acquisition and analysis.  Familiarity with electronic hardware and/or electrical systems from an assembly and testing perspective.  Building on your base electronics knowledge, we will provide job-specific training unique to our products and technologies.  You will enjoy “hands-on” work alongside the scientific team supporting on a diverse set of applications.

For candidates with B.S. degrees, this position is eligible to earn an “on-the-job” Masters of Engineering (M.Eng.) Degree through a professional program between Starfire and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Plasma Engineering or Electrical Engineering. If eligible and meeting requirements, Starfire will reimburse tuition costs for the M.Eng. while working 75% full time over a two-year period. The M.Eng. capstone project will be directly relevant to work at Starfire.

Job Summary:
​Responsible for making components, assembling subsystems, constructing test fixtures, and performing system testing for nGen® and Centurion® particle accelerators.  Emphasis on electronics, microelectronics, and controls. Perform physical and electronic property assessments, and present data to the R&D team and customers.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Perform component fabrication, assembly, integration, and hardware testing. 

  • Apply electronics test/debug experience to prototype and production assemblies. 

  • Assist systems and R&D engineers meeting milestones and deliverables. 

  • Communicate consistently and openly with engineers, technicians, and managers. 

  • Actively pursue effective collaboration with other team members.

Required Qualifications: 

  • Relevant associate degree or Baccalaureate degree or equivalent experience: 

    • e.g., Electronics Engineering, Electronics Technician, Auto Technician, Controls Technician

  • Capability to read electrical schematics and mechanical drawings. 

  • Desire to learn, appreciates hands-on work, strong mechanical aptitude, and experience with electronics

  • Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills fluent in English (written and verbal)

  • Proficient with MS Office Software & Teams Flexible and willing to work with multiple functional groups within the company.

  • Able to lift 50lbs. and perform physical tasks in various positions: standing, reaching, crouching, kneeling, etc.

Desired Qualifications:  

  • Minimum 3+ years’ work experiences

  • Experience in one or more of the following: 

    • Electronics repair/rework

    • Radio frequency electronics

    • FPGA programming (Verilog), C# programming .NET framework

  • Familiarity with Solidworks and Mechanical Design

  • Ability to take initiative and work independently.
